[Press Release Vlaams Belang]: Hungary Should Take Over Belgian EU Presidency

04/28/2010 :: According to the Vlaams Belang, the fall of the federal government and the regime crisis that triggered it, are rendering the Belgian EU presidency impossible and in any case politically undesirable.

The Belgian EU presidency should be taken over by Hungary, which is part of the first trio presidency since the coming into force of the Lisbon Treaty, along with Spain and Belgium. The advancing of its EU presidency by six months could probably create some discomfort for Hungary's new government, but the problems would be much bigger if Belgium were to hold the presidency in the current circumstances.

Advanced elections of the federal Belgian Parliament will not solve any problem, because they will be unconstitutional if the Brussel-Halle-Vilvoorde constituency is not split up. A constitutional imbroglio will be unavoidable. After the Belgian parliamentary elections of 2007, it took nine months to form a government.

A country that is unable to govern itself cannot lay claim to preside over the European Union. No one would benefit if the Belgian problems would be exported to the rest of Europe.

The Vlaams Belang advocates the creation of an independent Flemish State, and calls on the European Union to prepare for that event.
